I prefer things that are from scratch rather than from a box, but when it comes to brownies I love the way cheap boxed brownies turn out. I like how they are a fudge brownie with that paper thin crunchy layer on top, & they are quick to make. I'd love a similar brownie recipe so I can give up the box for good!
Anyone got something like that?

Mine usually come from someone named Duncan or Betty.
You asked the right girl at the right time!!! I just came upon the easiest, best brownie recipe this week that made me abandon the box forever. Go buy Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate and the recipe for One-Bowl Brownies is inside the box. It literally takes one bowl and a wooden spoon and all the ingredients that you usually have on hand anyway. I'm totally converted!!!
I've got something coming your way, oh boy do I.
I totally understand! I love the box ones and they always seem to turn out perfect. I have a brownie recipe that I started using though that I found earlier this year. It is really fudgy and yummy although a couple of times it has come out more cake like, but I think that happened those times because I stirred to much. I'll email you the recipe today.
Oh just get over making everything from scratch, you cannot beat a
$.99 brownie from a box, add you nuts, chocolate chips and call it semi-homemade!!! Ignore the hydrogenated oils and other items you cannot pronounce - I do. but just in case somebody has a good one, forward it to me.

We actually tested out a few recipes awhile back because I didn't have any boxes of brownie mix. Once I tested one I got curious and tested more! The one bowl recipe I did make. Those were okay but lacked something I couldn't figure out. Now that you mentioned the crusty top layer that was it. There's one on the Betty crocker (I think?) website that was pretty good too. But I never found one I liked as much as the box. I always thought it was the type of chocolate you used. I'd love to have the recipe you find and love!
You gave me a craving for brownies now.
This is the closest thing I have found : http://whatsthebrownstuff.blogspot.com/2009/08/delicious-brownies.html.
It is fudgy and chewy and after it cools has a crunchy top, plus it is healthier than most recipes.
