Today is Wednesday, & that means playgroup. I don't always go during winter months, but Hannah was extra busy & crazy this morning so I thought we could use the outing. Having other kids to play with would be good for her & I knew I would enjoy some adult conversation.
There is a little friend that Hannah adores & usually plays with so well, but today there was an incident involving another child's stroller. No one saw what happened, but being that 2-year-olds aren't the best at sharing just yet.... in her frustration, over who knows what, she bit her little friend on the arm!! (Sorry to all of Hannah's Grandma's, she isn't perfect!) I was so devastated & upset that I literally became nauseous! I know that toddlers bite... (heck, Hannah has been bit twice and one of them I don't even know who was to blame... ) but it doesn't make it any easier to deal with, especially when it's your kid doing the biting!
I immediately removed her from the situation & had her apologize to her sobbing friend. Then we sat down for a little "Time Away" to decompress, talk about our actions & what would have been the better way to handle our frustration. The mom of our little victim was GREAT, she kept telling me it was okay, things happen and she knows that Hannah is not a mean kid. But I don't want to be the mother of a child no one wants to play with, or wants their kids to play with... perhaps I am being a little dramatic (it's what I do...), but it's hard to have your child do something out of their own free will & choice, and yet you feel like it is a reflection upon you and your parenting. (Which, I know it isn't, but you get the point, right?)
I know that this is just the beginning of a lifetime of Hannah using her agency, and there is only so much we can do! I will have to learn to deal with and accept these changes, but I promise, I won't eve like them!! It's just one of those downsides to motherhood!

Hannahisms
I love Hannah at age 2 & all of the fun things that come along with it!
She is very into pretend play & to show me all her faces, she has a mad face, a scared face, a sad face (which comes with a pathetic cry), a happy face (I love this one even though it looks more like a child with a terrible under bite.), a sleep face (complete with a yawn or two.) This last week she also showed me that she knows how to make funny faces involving her finger & her tongue. She looks very serious while making this face, but laughs & laughs once she is finished.
Hannah loves to pretend that all of us are characters from her favorite shows. One that we play a lot is Clifford the big red dog, but she is never Clifford, that is usually Dad's role. She is either Emily-Elizabeth (Clifford's child owner) or another female dog from the show (Cleo). But playing Clifford involves crawling around like a dog & is complete with a game of fetch. She loves to be the dog & fetch her toy more than she likes to throw it. But anyone that knows Hannah, knows she has a bit of a bossy side, so there are times she throws the toys & yells "GO GET IT!" pointing towards the object. It's very hard to keep a serious face while doing this.

Hannah also loves to get all dressed up, most of her dress-ups are girly princess things, but just this morning she was in her Woody costume. She also likes to dress Jeff & I up in things so we can all dance around the house. Jeff is such a good sport, because for some reason she finds more joy putting all the girly things on him than me. But as the dad of a daughter, what choice does he have? If you don't have a daughter perhaps you'd think he has a lot of choice, but he doesn't. Just last week some friends of ours had a baby girl & Jeff insisted that we go buy a princess set to give to the Dad, because Jeff knew what Shawn would be doing in about 2 years. And of course Shawn tried to protest, but we know the truth. The day after we bought & gave this gift I received this video clip that was so perfect. I tried putting it up here, but haven't had any luck.
Hannah is a bit of a home body, which she comes by quite naturally, but sometimes it's a bit frightening how much she likes to stay home. When we are out & about she is always saying: "Mom, let's go home!" I'm thinking it might be an age thing, or then again it might just be a Hannahism.
Monday the 22nd
I somehow forgot to publish this, it's been sitting in my drafts... OOPS!
I like to think that Hannah is a smart girl, and especially with certain things, but her colors are not her strong point. I'm not so sure if she doesn't know them or chooses not to show me that she knows them. But Jeff & I were talking about how we need (well me more than him) needs to work with her on colors. So I decided to do a color of the week, choosing a new color each week. Last week was Blue. I chose blue, because that is the color she says the most. I got a piece of blue paper & wrote BLUE on it, and I hung it on the wall. After telling her the plan & the weeks color we went on a blue hunt searching for blue items. She did all she could to try to change the subject. She grabbed her wand & told me she was a princess & to follow her. Needless to say, the blue hunt didn't last long. For lunch I gave her a blue napkin & blueberries. I just made it a really blue day. Not once would she say the word blue. When we went to pick Jeff up from school I proceeded to tell him about the blue day & all the ways she tried to avoid having to play or find anything blue. So we get home, Jeff went over to the blue paper & said:
"Hey, Hannah, what color is this!"
She replied with an enthusiastic "BLUE!!!"
That little stinker!!!
Tonight we went to dinner with some friends to Texas Roadhouse to celebrate Jeff's birthday. It was great food & even better company. With all the chatting at dinner, we didn't get home until after Hannah's bed time, so we didn't have a sit down family home evening lessen, the dinner counts, right??

Mr. Tee's Birthday Weekend
Mr. Tee turned 30 on Saturday & we have basically been counting down for a year! I went back and forth on party plans (seems to be something I do often... I have a hard time making up my mind.) and I decided to do a party here at our house. This was going to be an adult only party (no, not an "adult party" just one without our kids) because I thought we would enjoy a night without having to keep one eye & ear on our kids. We would have dinner, play game and talk. I had invited 6 other couples, and only 3 or 4 were going to be able to make it. I was going to order food from Kansas City BBQ around the corner from our house.
All week we had been warned about another storm heading our way... at one point we were to expect 10 inches of snow. Well this had me a little concerned, thinking that some people may not want to venture out in that & some people may have a hard time finding a babysitter. So I held off on ordering the food and making the cake. By Thursday afternoon after hearing of some trouble finding a babysitter, I decided to hold off on the party... I wasn't sure if I should cancel or just postpone it for a week. Well I opted to cancel & we decided to do dinner on Friday night at Texas Roadhouse. This seemed to be great, it was before the storm & even more people might be able to make it. The Bug & I were going to drop Mr. Tee off at work Friday so we could go buy him a birthday gift. Well on the way to his office The Bug began to puke! So I looked at Mr. tee & said, "Take us home, we don't need the car!" I was so bummed, but probably not as bummed as the birthday boy! I was also a little irritated at the mom who came to our playgroup on Wednesday and they told us that her son had been up puking all night!!
Once home, I proceeded to call everyone & inform them that we would not make it to dinner! So I decided to get hopping on the birthday cake, so at least I could try and salvage his birthday. The flu bug didn't seem like a bad one, The Bugwas back to normal before bed, so I started planning (in my head this time) a way to still make Mr. Tee's 30th as great as I could. Saturday morning after he played some racquetball and then we headed out to run some errands. I told him we would head home, put The Bug down for a nap & I was going to run to the grocery store. So we did just that, but before the grocery store I went to Academy sports to pick up a birthday gift or two. On the way home I decided I would call the Davis' when I got home and see if they wanted to meet us for steak that night. But much to my surprise, I arrived home to find out that now Mr. Tee had the flu. I believe his exact words were: "This is the worst birthday EVER!" Poor guy, can't catch a break! So the afternoon involved naps & crackers for him. He did mange to open up his gifts (with some help from The Bug of course), but we opted to hold off on the cake for today.
Mr. Tee was feeling a bit better this morning, but still not back to normal. We stayed home from church (I thought that was more kind than sharing these great germs.) So today has been very low key, I just put a lasagna in the oven for dinner. As much as Mr. Tee loves lasagna, I don't think it will make up for such a sad weekend. Hopefully this day of rest will heal our little home. The Bug did take a great nap, which was much needed, and Jeff is napping as I sit here. I did put candles in the cake and sang to him, and he was a good sport and went along with it. I hope his wish involved me NOT getting this flu, but I didn't tell him that.
I know that I need to somehow make this birthday up to him, but I don't know if that is possible, or how to do so. I really did try & it seemed that the harder I tried, the more the forces fought against me. Hopefully this birthday weekend isn't an indicator of how the rest of Mr. Tee's year will go!

What's in an age- Random Thoughts of the day
Throughout the last 2 years of motherhood I have learned a lot, some of it is useful & some not so useful. There is so much to remember, so many "rules" so many "guidelines" and way too many "suggestions". And all of these things vary depending on where you live & who your doctor is, etc. As time passes I realized that some of the "rules" are more of "guidelines". Such as when to offer a sippy cup when do start your child on solids or even when to turn their car seat around.
There are set ages for all of these things, but I personally think that the age is more of a guideline. I mean, does something magical happen over night that makes them safe in all of these situations? I know that most of these "rules/guidelines" have other factors, such as weight and/or height, but I have to chuckle when I hear people going by the age requirements. I know I was the same way, I didn't turn The Bug's car seat around until nearly 13 months. It wasn't because I was afraid of doing it too soon, it was more out of being lazy (I often times refer to myself as the slacker mom.... this was after I read the book Confessions of a Slacker Mom... anyway, back to the point.) and the fact that The Bug is petite, so I didn't feel a huge rush. If I have a child that is long for their age I would really consider turning them around earlier than 12 months. I mean, is it safe to have their little legs squished up if you were in an accident? And it's not as if the evening before turning 1 they magically get stronger. My point here (if you can really call it that) is that you really have to think of certain things as guidelines & discuss them with your pediatrician and go from there. I am just not a person that believe magic things come over night. I guess I should have stated that I WASN'T a person who believed these things... until recently.
I can't say so much that these things happened over night, but they happened in a VERY short amount of time... The Bug is a VERY busy toddler. She keeps me very busy, & she had started having little meltdowns months ago & throwing little fits along with just causing mischief in general. But I kid you not when I say that since the time right around her turning 2, she has honestly become a 2 year old. Those little meltdowns & fits weren't anything compared to what I see regularly now, and the mischief I spoke of was nothing compared to the things she gets into now. She is always seeking for things to get into, cupboards to throw things out of, books to take off shelves, toilet paper to spin or pull off the roll, Toys to throw, and the list goes on and on. Now I'm still a little hesitant in believing that something so drastic could come about in such a very short amount of time, perhaps it is just that I now know she is 2 & I have heard so many things about the "Terrible 2's" and so I am convincing myself that things have intensified. Either way, it is intense.. I wouldn't so much call them the terrible 2's, because for the most part I do find it amazing to watch her grow and learn. Even watching her temper flare up is interesting to see, because I try to see who she is more like, mom or dad. So perhaps there isn't a real answer here, just a thought provoking question... so allow yourself to ponder.
There is however one other thing that has recently changed & I can't dismiss it as easily. Her LOVE for girly movies... you know the ones, the Disney Princess movies. She loves Cinderella, Beauty & the Beast, & even Snow White. Before this recent love developed she was happy with anything colorful with animals, such as Finding Nemo, Lilo & Stitch, Curious George, etc. Don't get me wrong, she still enjoys those, but not as much as her love for the Princess movies. This is perhaps one of those nature/nurture debates, but I won't go there, because I don't want to argue about something as amazing as my little girls passions developing. She still does love a variety of toys & activities, but she is turning into a girly-girl. So perhaps something does happen over night (or a short period of time) that allows a child to start to develop those passions & interests. I don't think these developmental change is something that happens at 2, but just happens whenever your child reaches that developmental milestone. But I do know that it came on very quickly for us.

P.S. this is a picture from September, but it went with the ramblings!

Ice Storm 2007
This weekend has been a long one & I'm having a hard time getting into weekday mode. We got a nice storm that came in Friday morning & was off and on for a few days. Mr. Tea's office closed early on Friday, so that added an extra 1/2 day to our weekend. He didn't have school yesterday, because of MLK Day and because of the weather he didn't go into work either. So that made for a long 3 1/2 day weekend.
There are lots of people that seemed to be bothered with being stuck at home, but I really enjoyed all the time at home, especially because I had someone to help out with The Bug. I was able to get so much done, I am beyond caught up on my laundry (we'll see how long that lasts) and I was able to clean & organize some closets on top of some cold weather baking. Church was cancelled because of the weather, so that really made for a long weekend at home. We did venture out on Sunday afternoon to have dinner at The Davis house. I was content to stay home, but glad I got out... if nothing more than to let the Bug play with other kids. The kids had a great time, & the adults seemed to enjoy themselves also.
We did go out yesterday to run some errands & get a few things from the grocery store. When we got home we did a little sledding across the yard & down the driveway. We have a really large cardboard box lid & Mr. Tea would hold it while running & would hop onto it on his stomach & sled. The Bug thought it was rather entertaining. So she and I sat in there & did a few runs ourselves with Mr. Tea pushing us. We didn't last too long, because of the cold. But it was good to get some fresh air & to hear her laugh in delight. All in all, I can say that despite the fact that all the heavy comfort food consumed, combined with my gym being closed all weekend has made me feel a little too insulated... It was an enjoyable weekend.

Saturday January 6th - The Bug's Party
I suppose if I want to keep this blog up to date that I better do just that & update! As I mentioned before, we had a Dora the Explorer Birthday Fiesta to celebrate The Bug's 2nd birthday. We had some friends over (who happen to have kids that are her friends), if we lived near family we would have just done a family party. I have got mixed reviews about my choice in having a party (isn't that the best part about being a parent... having anyone & everyone tell you their opinion on your parenting styles & often times mock your choices?) Being that I am the mom & it is ultimately my choice & because I love birthdays, & feel that they are a big deal, (because it's YOUR day) I opted to do this little party with friends. And with it all said & done, I'm very pleased that I did it. The Bug & her friends had a great time, and the adults enjoyed the evening also.... okay, sorry about all the ramblings... back to the party details.
I had been trying to find a theme, something that I could base the cake around & then everything else would follow. It was a very hard choice, because she loves everything, & she would be thrilled with anything. But a dear friend from church had mentioned a Dora party she had attended & how they had mexican food & it was a lot of fun I considered that avenue. I looked through cake books & couldn't find a Dora cake, but found a cute Strawberry Shortcake cake that I thought I could do something similar & just have a fun girl themed party. I wasn't sold on my decision as it got closer to starting the cake, so I went back to the Dora theme. Partly because I knew The Bug would be happy either way, & because there were going to be mostly little boys so a girly party didn't seem quite right, & my love of mexican food played a role!

So the planning began, on Tuesday the 2nd I started looking for Dora decorations & little bags to fill with toys & treats. We had decided to do a pinata & bought an inexpensive horse pinata, but on the way home I wasn't loving it & decided I could make a pinata. So during the remainder of the week, I did just that... I made a purple backpack pinata & I was pleased that it resembled Backpack enough that the kids could recognize the character.
Wednesday I started the cake. I knew it was going to be a process, as I had decided on a 2 tier colorful cake that I would put a Dora figure on top. So I knew I needed to make the cake let it cool & then fill it & do a crumb coat & let them set up before icing & decorating. I also knew that there was no way I could do any of this if Hannah was awake, so it would have to be worked on during nap times & after she went to bed to eliminate distractions. I was able to have the cake finished by Friday so I wouldn't have to fuss with it on Saturday. YIPPEE!!

Saturday morning I started the shredded beef and right before the party there was a lot of running about getting the last minute things ready & getting the food out in time for the 5:00 start of the Fiesta! We served chips & salsa with guacamole, there was the option to have your shredded beef on a salad or more like a burrito, with corn & beans, cheese quesadillas, a fresh fruit plate & a mango-guava-pineapple punch. Yum Yum! We had the kids go out to do the pinata right after they ate, as it was getting dark. Then back inside for birthday cake & the opening of presents. Sorry that this ended up being longer & more detailed than I had planned, butt this blog is sort of like my own journal, so I am including all the details that I feel are needed or wanted.

Happy Birthday Bug
The Bug turned 2 on Thursday January 4th... where has the time gone? I really can't believe how much she has changed, she has gotten a little taller & only gained a couple of pounds. But she has lots more hair & she knows lots more words. She is such a busy busy busy busy girl, and keeps both of us hopping! She really seemed to catch onto the idea of birthdays being "Your Day" she loved when dad popped in her room first thing in the morning singing Happy Birthday, she giggled & giggled. Then she came to find me so I could sing another round of her new found favorite song. The day was filled with lots of phone calls, all for her (which she again loved.)The Bug was thrilled to see her new white table & chair set that mom & dad had spent the evening before painting. She kept saying "Lunch Time, Sit Down" (she can be a bit bossy). In the morning dad headed off to work, while the Bug and I spent the rest of the morning playing & running to the grocery store. After her nap we went to the dollar theater to see the movie, Open Season, she really loved all the different animals & whenever I would laugh at anything she would look at me & belt out a fake laugh with the rest of the audience saying: "That's silly!"
When dad got home we went out to enjoy the finest dinner a 2 year old could hope for, a Wendy's Kids Meal. Then we sang one last round of Happy Birthday before she blew out the candles on her giant Rice Krispy Treat heart. We then put the birthday celebrations on hold until Saturday for her Dora the Explorer Birthday Fiesta!

A New Year!
AAHHH... It's a New Year!!The last few years I have stopped writing a list of resolutions for the year & part of me thought this was a good thing, not so much pressure weighing me down in the form of goals I will not complete. The alternative is sort of making these goals that are more of "sort of goals", I don't write them down & I don't really tell anyone about them. So it's basically the same thing as what I've done previously, but without wasting paper. They are both pathetic attempts are improving myself. So this year I am determined to make "reasonable" goals & to let Mr. Tee in on the goals & to actually DO THEM! We'll see if it sticks!
Starting a blog is something I have been thinking about for the last month or so & of course I told myself I would hold off until the first of the year (it seemed like a great goal to set, didn't it?) So that was the plan, the first of the year I would start to keep a blog. This would be a good way for me to update family & friends on our little family, & a good way to keep some sort of journal. Well just as in years past I set a goal & here it is January 7th & here I sit starting my blog so I can feel justified that I started it the first week of the year! I know what you are all thinking "How long is this going to last...?" Well let me explain with a list of excuses!! The year starts on a Holiday & who can start any new goal on a Holiday? It's a holiday!! Then the little misses birthday is just a few days into the year, so I had birthday prep & then we had a little party on Saturday, so the first week of every year is going to go similar to that, & I better get used to it. And I have thought about this blog every day this year, so that has to count for something!
